A reverse proxy server is often used to improve security, particularly in an Internet deployment. It prevents direct connection with the application server, while still allowing a client to access an application.
A reverse proxy server works by forwarding requests to an internal server for processing, then forwarding the response back to the client.
A reverse proxy server is transparent to the client, that is, it is not aware that requests are being forwarded, rather than processed.
Many products provide reverse proxy capability, for example:
§ Apache HTTPD v2.2 with mod_proxy
§ Microsoft Internet Security & Acceleration Server (ISA) Server 2006
To configure reverse proxy access for Dekho, perform the steps in Configuring Dekho Settings for Reverse Proxy and Configuring ArcGIS Server for Reverse Proxy, plus either Configuring Apache HTTPD for Reverse Proxy or Configuring Microsoft ISA for Reverse Proxy.
Either standard HTTP or secure HTTP (HTTPS) can be used. Extra configuration (section 0) is required for secure HTTP.
